A Community Mural at the Zoo

There’s something powerful about putting color on a wall that lives where people gather — and even more powerful when that wall lives somewhere like a zoo, where families, kids, educators, and caretakers all come together with curiosity and joy.
We recently had the opportunity to create a mural at the Salisbury Zoo, and this one was all about collaboration, connection, and community storytelling.
The vision for the mural was simple:
Celebrate nature. Highlight community. And invite participation.
From the start, we wanted to make this project more than just a painted wall. We asked ourselves:
How can we make this feel like something the community can see themselves in — even if they never touched a brush?
So we built a design that was bold, accessible, and joyful — a mural that people of all ages could step into, understand, and feel proud of.
🎨 Community in Action
Throughout the mural process, we had well over 100 participants including volunteers, families, and even zoo staff join in — not just to paint, but to share stories, ask questions, and take part in something creative together.
That’s the magic of public art.
It becomes a mirror. A conversation.
It says, “This space belongs to all of us.”
And when that space happens to be a place filled with animals, wonder, and education — the impact feels even more alive.
🌿 The Why Behind the Wall
Murals like this remind us that art doesn’t have to live in a gallery to matter.
Sometimes the most meaningful pieces are the ones painted in places where people don’t expect to see them — but absolutely need to feel them.
We’re grateful to the Zoo team (as well as Allen Swiger with the City of Salisbury, MD) and the community for trusting us with this wall.
More than anything, we hope it becomes a point of pride, a backdrop for memories, and a reminder that creativity can thrive anywhere — even between the trees.
Let’s make more walls matter.
With gratitude,
Brandon
