This opportunity kickstarted our mural career and was our very first large scale art piece! This humbling opportunity to create ‘Believe’ was presented to us through a friend of ours who owned a yoga studio who we had gifted a painting. One of her students owned a construction company and took notice of the painting, got our information, and then personally reached out about wanting a mural created for the wall of their downtown building. One thing led to the next, and through his belief and encouragement, as well as our own, we designed and installed our very first mural.
After speaking together, we determined our goal with this artwork was to spread the message of believing in one’s self. We decided on the name “Believe", which was proudly written within the final design.
As this was our very first mural, we had to learn how to work with a larger than life canvas, including all of the challenges that came with doing so. This learning experience allowed us to gain the skills of operating a scissor lift, painting on brick, and using anti-graffiti coating to seal our work.
We ended up completing the mural in less than a month, and used the final three evenings of the project to invite the community out to help us paint the final design element, a large sunflower. This allowed us to share the experience of painting a mural with our local community.
Over seventy people came out to help paint the mural as well as share their own personal thoughts on what they believed in. These affirmations were written down and collected in a notebook, which we have to appreciate forever.
